To apply for a student visa, the following documents and fees are required:

1. Student Visa Application INZ 1012 |
The nearest Immigration NZ office, NZ Embassy or High Commission. Or it can be downloaded from INZ website www.immigration.govt.nz – go to Forms and Guides, select Study Forms and Guides then select Student Visa Application. |
This form must be fully completed in English and signed. An application fee is required – see below. |
2. Visa Application Fee - (non-refundable) |
Fees can be calculated online through www.immigration.govt.nz – go to Fees for the Office and Fee Finder. | Fees must be paid in the local currency of the country in which the application is lodged. Acceptable payment methods include bank cheque/ bank draft and cash. Credit cards are accepted at some offices. Check www.immigration.govt.nz or the nearest diplomatic office for specific acceptable payment methods. |
3. Passport-sized photo |

The photo must be attached to the ‘Application to Study in New Zealand’ form. It must be a recent photo. |
4. Offer of Place | The institution when the student’s enrolment has been confirmed. The offer must include: - the name of the course - the student has been accepted - the minimum time required to complete the course - if the course fee has been paid or the student is exempt from the fee (eg scholarship students) |
All education providers must be signatories to the Ministry of Education’s Code of Practice. The Course and Provider must be approved by NZQA. |
5. Evidence of payment (or exemption from payment) |
The student’s New Zealand education provider. |
A fee receipt is required that specifies the tuition fees in a dollar amount and the period of tuition that has been paid for. If other fees are included (such as home stay or agents fees) this must be visible in a breakdown of the fee receipt. |
6. Written guarantee of accommodation |
The school, institution or an individual providing the accommodation. |
This guarantee letter needs to confirm that suitable accommodation is available to the student in New Zealand. A letter from an individual guarantor needs to include evidence of NZ residence and ownership/tenancy of the accommodation provided) |
7. Evidence of Sufficient Funds to live on while the student is studying – such as a Financial Undertaking Form and a bank certificate or statement. |
Financial Undertaking Form INZ 1014 can be downloaded from www.immigration.govt.nz – go to Forms and Guides, select Study Forms and guides. | A Financial Undertaking Form is completed by a guarantor. If the student does not have a guarantor, evidence is required: - For courses more than 36 weeks: NZ$10,000 per year plus return flight fares - For courses less than 36 weeks: NZ$1,000 per month plus return flight fares Acceptable evidence includes photocopies of travellers’ cheques, bank drafts, letters of credit and bank statements. |
8. A return airfare to the student’s home country or evidence of sufficient funds to buy one |

9. Valid Passport |

The student’s passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the student’s planned departure from New Zealand. |
10. Full Medical and X-ray certificate – 'depends on length of stay and country of residence in the past 5 years' |

Medical certificates and x-ray checks must be less than 3 months old at the time they are submitted to INZ with the application. |
11. Certificate of Good Conduct (police certificate) – required for students studying in New Zealand for more than 2 years |

This is to show the student is of good character. The Certificate must be six months old or less of age at the time the application is submitted to INZ |
Additional documents that may be required are:
• Letter of Consent from parent or parents in the form of a statutory declaration
• Family Census Register
• Qualification certificate and result slips
• Certificate of employment from past/current employers
• Study leave consent by employer.
• History of personal funds (such as savings history/bank statements etc)
• Any further information deemed necessary.
The New Zealand government has bilateral fee waiver agreements with certain countries. Citizens of those countries do not have to pay fees for certain visas. For a list of these, go to www.immigration.govt – search for New Zealand Immigration Guide to Fees (page 8).
