Students who have skills New Zealand needs and who wish to stay in New Zealand long term, may apply for a Skilled Migrant Visa. This gives them the opportunity to work and live in New Zealand permanently.
New Zealand is experiencing a skill shortage across the labour market and wants to recruit people into certain industries, all over New Zealand. Industries which have a strong demand for skilled people include:
• Education
• Health and medical groups
• Information and communications technology
• Agriculture and farming
• Engineering
• Trades.
INZ holds two lists which identify the industries and professions where New Zealand needs skilled people.
The Immediate Skill Shortage List identifies the jobs and skills needed in New Zealand, by region.
The Long Term Skill Shortage List shows the areas where there is a sustained and ongoing shortage of skilled people throughout the whole of New Zealand.
For the above lists, refer to www.immigration.govt.nz Select Skilled Migrant Category – both forms are available under Toolbox

Applicants will need to show they have the potential to contribute by submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI). The EOI gives points for certain factors, including qualifications, work experience, employment in New Zealand and age. Points are awarded for New Zealand qualifications according to the level specified in the List of Recognised Qualifications – there are bonus points for New Zealand qualifications and work experience.
If the EOI Selection Criteria is met, the student will be able to apply for residence.
For more information on Skilled Migrant Visas, go to www.immigration.govt.nz – under Apply and Settle, click on Skilled Migrant.
The Expression of Interest Form and Guide are available under Forms and Guide – Residence Forms.
Partners and dependent children may be included in an Expression of Interest, and, if the applicant is invited to do so, the application for residence. If residence is granted, it extends to partners and children, though they also must meet health, character, and English language requirements.
