New Zealand Professor Improving Artificial Limbs
Tuesday, 27 January 2009
Massey University professor Peter Xu, regarded as world-leader in mechanical limbs, has been granted $1.2m to take the technology behind wearable assisted devices to the next level, along with four PhD students.
(via 3news) Professor Xu, from Massey's School of Engineering and Advanced Technology in Albany, has been given the grant for the three-year project from the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology.
He said the research involved plans to develop new cutting-edge technologies that would safely figure out what the person wanted to do with the muscle -- even if it has been amputated -- using motion commands from the central nervous system.
"We have a good track record in the area of robotics and we have identified a new direction that will be able to help people," he said.
He will appoint four PhD students to carry out the work at Massey University.
"What we would like to see eventually is the chance for a New Zealand manufacturer to take this device up for trial," Prof Xu said.
