Kiwi and Chinese Film Students Cooperate on Documentary

Tuesday, 16 March 2010

Film students from Unitec in Auckland, New Zealand and the Beijing Film Academy, BFA, have come together to create a documentary about Chinese New Zealand couples.

(via In Unison) The documentary is being co-directed by Unitec student Rose Damon, 21, and Beijing student Li Bo, 22.

Students from Bejing spent three weeks in New Zealand filming, leaving on February 26.

Between five and six Unitec students will visit Beijing in June and July.

Mr Bo says the group faced the challenge of choosing a topic that could be filmed in both countries.

The whole film is bilingual and will need to be subtitled in both languages, says Miss Damon.

They settled on the subject of couples because they felt it had the potential to reach out to any culture.

The group was approached by many cross cultural couples and interviewed around 12, before settling on the final five.

“We wanted to show a spectrum of experiences that cross cultural couples actually have. What we essentially went for was variety.”

“I would hope that, if we are successful, we will set a precedent between our school and Beijing academy so more exchanges can take place,” says Miss Damon.

Discussions about an exchange have been ongoing for some time, falling into place in December last year.
