New Zealand Debates England for World Schools Crown

Monday, 15 September 2008

Today in Washington, D.C., the schools debating team from New Zealand will face off against England in the final round of the World Schools Debating Championships.

Teams from thirty-nine countries are participating in this year's championships of the prestigious international debating competition, which has been held every year since 1988. New Zealand last won the event in 1995, and are hoping to reclaim the championship.

After the eight preliminary rounds, the top 16 teams advanced to a knock-out series of rounds. Gradually all but two teams have been eliminated, with New Zealand defeating Scotland in their semi-final, and England defeating Greece in the other semi-final debate.

The final round is taking place at the Reagan Center in Washington, D.C.
