Robot Showdown for NZ Students

On Saturday the 6th of September approximately 300 of New Zealand’s brightest kids descended onto Point View Primary School in Auckland to compete against one another at the national RoboCup competition. Winners have been announced across six categories of the RoboCup competition: Robotic Dance (Junior and Senior), Robotic Search and Rescue (Junior and Premier) and Robotic Soccer (Junior and Senior).

(via Scoop Education) RoboCup is a science and technology-oriented, robotics education initiative sponsored by Toshiba and Modern Teaching Aids. The initiative aims to further research and education in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence.

Believe it or not, the international RoboCup initiative is aiming to have a team of fully autonomous humanoid robot soccer players win a game against a human soccer team, by 2050!

The winners of the national RoboCup 2008 competition were:
• The winner for Robotic Dance Junior is Oliver Skzrynski, Anil Bhana Savage of Scots College, Wanganui/ Wellington
• The winner for Robotic Soccer Junior is Adam Maddren, Sebastian Ragg, Michael Olsen of Waikowhai Intermediate, Auckland
• The winner for Robotic Search and Rescue Junior is Rhys Bailey, Nick Baugen, Peter Ivory of Wanganui Intermediate, Wanganui
• The winner for Robotic Dance Senior is Sam Mence and Hayden Patel of Birkenhead College, Auckland
• The winner for Robotic Soccer Senior is Vaughan Weatherall, Ben Liddell, Sam Paulin and Edward Law of Logan Park School, Dunedin
• The winner for Robotic Search and Rescue Premier is Tara Dickonson, Wanganui Intermediate, Wanganui
