Central Otago, New Zealand

  • Welcome

Central Otago is made up of a series of spectacular river basins and deep river gorges. A gold rush brought the first settlers but these days many locals earn a living making wine.

The region experiences the hottest summers and coldest winters in New Zealand. Rivers and lakes offer everything aquatic, from power boating and fishing to windsurfing and sailing.

Many wineries offer tastings throughout the summer months. You can blast through the district on a mountain bike or take a leisurely historic train trip – or both. Take the train out and make your own way back on two wheels along an unused rail line.

  • Otago Rail Trail

Otago Rail Trail takes you on a cycling or walking adventure of a lifetime through 150km of some of New Zealand's most memorable scenery and awe-inspiring gold mining history.

  • Bridge Hill Alexandra

Bridge Hill overlooks the Old Bridge Piers that are the remains of the original (1882) Alexandra Bridge. The construction of this bridge was a huge task, considering the size of the river and the tools available at the time. The very first method of crossing the river was a packing case on a cable. This method was replaced by a punt, which ferried people across.

  • Snowboarders

Queenstown, New Zealand, is the Southern Hemisphere’s premier four-season lake and alpine resort. The arrival of winter is heralded by the arrival of snow-capped slopes, a tangible buzz in the town centre and a packed events calendar. When its time to hit the mountain, enjoy the variety of snowboarding and skiing.
