    The city is very flat so cycling is a great way to get around. Christchurch enjoys a thriving arts scene which attracts artists and performers from around the world to the largest city on New Zealand’s South Island.

    Christchurch is often the first stop for visitors going on to the Southern Alps or the natural coastal wonderland of Kaikoura, where diving, surfing and whale tours are popular.

  • Mount Hutt

    Just over one hour from Christchurch, Mt Hutt is one of New Zealand’s most popular ski areas, catering for skiers and snowboarders.

  • Kaikoura whale watch

    Off the Kaikoura coastline is a marine environment so rich in nutrients that it attracts some of the most magnificent creatures with which we share our planet. Among them are Giant Sperm Whales that can grow up to 20 metres and weigh over 50 tons. These whales can be seen all year round making Kaikoura one of the most popular whale watching locations in the world.

  • Moeraki Boulders

    The famous Moeraki boulders lie scattered along a beach 40 kilometres south of Oamaru. According to Maori legend, the boulders are gourds washed from the great voyaging canoe Araiteuru when it was wrecked upon landfall in New Zealand some 1000 years ago.

    Being the largest South Island city there are many bus routes in and out of Christchurch. Buses are very affordable and offer a relaxed, clean and flexible way to get to Christchurch from around the South Island. Close
  • Car
    Christchurch is easily accessible from the north and south by car. It is easy to find and navigate around. Many people choose drive down to Christchurch from the North Island via Wellington (taking their car on the Ferry) transforming their trip into a beautiful scenic car journey. Close
  • Domestic Flight
    Christchurch Airport is coated about 15 minutes from the CBD and offers flights to/from all around New Zealand. In an hour you can be in Christchurch from Wellington or an hour and a half from Auckland. Close
  • Rail
    KiwiRail operates a train service from the top of the South Island (Picton) all the way down the East Cost to Christchurch. This service, known as the Coastal Pacific connects people with Wellington via ferry or light plane and is a beautiful, relaxed and convenient way to arrive in Christchurch. This service has recently reopened after being temporarily stopped following the February 22nd Christchurch Earthquake, where low demand (not safety concerns) led to the service being put on hold.     Christchurch Airport is one of the three biggest airports in New Zealand. Over 6 million passengers arrive and depart from Christchurch International Airport each year, with direct flights from around the world. Close
