West Coast, New Zealand

  • Welcome

The South Island’s west coast has some of New Zealand’s most spectacular scenery - mountains shrouded in mist, rainforests, glaciers and wild beaches. The coast is an outdoor thrill-seeker’s paradise.

Glacier tours and mountaineering are popular here, but there’s plenty to do for the less adventurous. Just a drive along the scenic coast road is a great way to spend a day.

West Coast hospitality is famous and the best place to enjoy it is in one of the many historic pubs. The area had its own 19th Century gold rush and you can still see signs of old mines in the hills.

  • 4WD trekking

The West Coast may have a reputation for its high rainfall, but because of all that water it has the most amazing off-road tracks through masses of puddles, mud and thriving rainforest.

  • Glacier on the West Coast

The ice age is still underway. While glaciers around the world are retreating, the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers still flow almost to sea level. They are widely regarded as the gem of New Zealand's West Coast Glaciers giving you the opportunity to experience the most spectacular glacier environment available to the general public anywhere in the world.

  • Greymouth

Greymouth lies beside the Tasman Sea and the Grey River. It is the geographic and commercial heart of the West Coast, with the region’s largest population. It’s an ideal base to explore the beautiful region of the West Coast.
