Alexis Perez Fontes

Name: Alexis Perez Fontes
Born: Uruguay
Locations: Auckland
Discipline: English Language

Alexis Fontes and his partner wanted to study in a country where English was spoken as the first language. "Being able to speak English will open a number of doors for me back home. I will have more choice in terms of my employment prospects, which could include working for a foreign company in Uruguay."

The dream became reality when Alexis' partner won a NZODA Postgraduate Scholarship to study towards a Masters in Veterinarian Science at Massey University, Palmerston North. Additionally, Alexis has been able to study at the Massey University English Language Centre. And his educational ambitions go further then this. "This is a wonderful opportunity for me! I also want to improve my knowledge about New Zealand agriculture. I am an Animal Production Technician back home in Uruguay and hope to be able to study towards a Diploma in Science at Massey University in 2004.

"I'm really enjoying New Zealand. Massey University is a great place to study the facilities and staff are great and there is good assistance available to international students. From the time we first arrived, the staff at the English Language Centre have helped the whole time. This has ranged from helping us to find a suitable flat to organising activities for students after class.

"The English classes are intensive - speaking in English in all your classes for six hours per day - so you feel as if you are making quicker progress."

In addition to his studies, New Zealand's recreational lifestyle has really appealed to Alexis and he has certainly made the most of this! "I enjoy the sports culture here in New Zealand. I have participated in rock climbing, kayaking and tramping in the mountains for the first time! I hope to go bungy jumping one day. I am continuing playing soccer which I also played back home. By playing soccer in the city, I can also meet other New Zealanders. New Zealanders enjoy a more balanced lifestyle and a wide range of age groups take part in sports activities."

Alexis is enthusiastic about his international experience and advises students to "come with an open mind come and find out more about different cultures". Looking to his eventual return to Uruguay, Alexis envisages a future where he can share his knowledge of agricultural management with colleagues and farmers, assisted by his English Language skills.
