Message from the Rector

For one hundred years Palmerston North Boys' High School has created a safe environment in which to provide a traditional education for young men. It is one of New Zealand's foremost schools in academic, sporting, music and cultural activities, enjoying regular national and international success. Palmerston North is a provincial University city and the school's ethos, based on the pursuit of personal success, is geared academically towards tertiary study

Palmerston North Boys' High School Profile

PNBHS is regarded as one of the top boys schools in New Zealand. It has a very strong academic tradition and is also a top school in the fields of sport and the performing arts.

Its popularity is reflected in its roll of 1650 students, making it the largest high school in Palmerston North City.
The schools NCEA qualification success rate generally exceeds 80% and its top students perform outstandingly at national level.Apart from the National Certificate of Education Achievement (NCEA), the school encourages its best students to enter the Cambridge International Examination. In 2007/8 PNBHS was named the top school in New Zealand in the Cambridge examinations with a number of students ranked in the first five places internationally in various subjects. 31 students were also studying University papers last year to extend their academic challenge. In 2006 PNBHS gained 74 scholarships, 2007, 66 and 2008, 55 making it one of the top 10 schools in New Zealand and one the top schools per student entry at Year 12 and 13 level. PNBHS was also the top school per cohort for scholarships with 66 in 2007 (4th overall in total) and 76 in 2006.
Life at Boys High school is not limited to academic studies. The schools sporting and cultural activities are encouraged and the school has great success in these areas. Rugby (Top 10 rugby school in NZ), Football (Traditionally in top 8), Hockey (2nd in NZ,2006 and 2007), Cricket (3rd 2006, 4th 2007, 4th 2008), Tennis, Basketball and athletics are the traditional sports played at Palmerston North Boys High School but many others are offered ranging from cycling, rock climbing tochess to name a few.
It is rare that all this is offered by a State school. The tuition fee of $12200 per annum is moderate and quite low compared with an equivalent Auckland school (like Auckland Grammar School). Home-stays are arranged by the school. The homestay cost is $NZD215 per week. The school has a hostel, but recommends that international students are placed in a home-stay to experience a NZ family environment
Palmerston North City is an attractive but small city. (Population 85,000). However, it is a city with a very strong education focus. It is the home of Massey University (Business, Vet Science, Agriculture. Science), UCOL (a Polytechnic offering diploma and degree programs) and the International Pacific College (a small private University of Degrees in International business and policy). Palmerston North presents a very safe environment for any student to study in. It is New Zealands equivalent of a Cambridge or Oxford with over 40% of the population involved in education. The city offers all the shopping and activity options of a larger city.
