Dunedin is the main centre of the Otago Region, in New Zealand’s south.

Kavanagh isa co-educational Catholic integrated Form 1-7 college which is in the centre of the vibrant university city of Dunedin. Kavanagh College was founded in 1870 and was one of the first Catholic secondary schools in New Zealand.

As a Catholic college we pride ourselves on high academic achievement, good discipline and excellent pastoral care. Academic results include several tops scholars in the country and above average pass rates in NCEA and Scholarship examinations. Seventy percent of all students enrolling go to university and polytechnic courses. The college is committed to excellence in teaching and learning within a climate of faith and pastoral care.

Location and Facilities

The college is in the centre of a medium sized city which focuses on education. It is within walking distance to the town centre, the Otago University and Otago Polytechnic. The buildings are all newly developed and are warm and comfortable. Classrooms are carpeted and well furnished. Other facilities include five science laboratories, library, gymnasium, dance studios, drama suite, three computer laboratories, workshops, lecture theatre, auditorium and fitness studio.

Academic Programme/Subjects Offered

The College is proud of its academic history and over the years has achieve considerable success in external examinations. International students are welcome from Form 1 (Year 7). In Year 11,12 and 13 the following subject are options: Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Classical Studies, Computer Studies, Drama, Economics, English, French, German, Geography, History, History of Art, Mathematics, Mathematics with Statistics, Mathematics with Calculus, Music, Physical Education, Physics, Practical Art (Design, Painting and printmaking). All international students also receive ESOL (English as a second language) as part of their fee.

ExtracurricularProgramme

Students are encouraged to participate fully in the life of the college. Sport and culture form a major part of school activities. A full-time sports co-ordinator supports sports teams. Major sports played include netball, rugby, soccer, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, badminton, cricket, skiing, golf and basketball.
There are senior and junior choirs, a junior and senior orchestra and opportunity for public speaking and debating. There is a major dramatic or musical production each year.

Special Relations with Overseas Students

The school has up to 50 places for international students and encourages students from a number of countries who want to proceed to tertiary education and experience the New Zealand way of life.

Student Welfare

A teacher is appointed with special responsibility for overseas students. Close contact is maintained with the host families and regular contact made with both parties to ensure that students are happy.

English Language Support

All international students receive tuition in English. A full ESOL department operates with full-time teachers and part-time teachers. All students receive individual assistance with English Language. Senior students receive coaching with examination subjects.

Fees

The fee for the year 2011 for international students is NZ$12,000 per year.
