Wellington Girls' College is one of the leading state (government funded) high schools in New Zealand and most of our students - local and international - achieve the qualifications they need to go on to tertiary education both here and overseas.

Location, Facilities and Character

Founded in 1883, this is a highly respected girls' secondary school close to the centre of the capital city, a few minutes walk from the main shopping area and local transport centre.

You will learn in comfortable, modern facilities including science and multi-media computer laboratories. Students wear uniform in Year 9 - 12, students in Year 13 do not wear uniform.

In 2010 the school roll is 1250 students, witharound 60 international students, mainly from Asia and Europe. Our students excel in academic, cultural and sporting activities.

Academic Programmes / Subjects Offered

You can choose subjects from a first class academic programme that includes languages (Mandarin Chinese, German, Latin, French, Maori), Mathematics, Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Art, Economics and Accounting. There is also the chance to try new subjects such as Information Technology, Performing Arts, Media Studies, Psychology and Music as part of your school programme. We teach courses for the National Certificate of Educational Achievement at Years 11, 12 and 13 leading to University Entrance qualifications. We offer excellent ESOL and academic English programmes at all levels.

Co-curricular Programme

Students can take part in a number of sports - in and out of school - including:
April - August: hockey, soccer, badminton, basketball, netball, cross-county running;
February - May: waterpolo, track and field, cricket;
all year round through clubs: swimming, equestrian, yachting, tennis, golf.

There is also a wide range of cultural activities including three choirs, learning a musical instrument, school orchestras and band, or maybe joining in a school musical or drama production

Student Welfare

The Language Centre is your special base in the school and the International Manager, Homestay Manager, Guidance Counsellor, level Deans and the ESOL teachers are always available to support you.

Accommodation

Wellington Girls' College supports the Code of Practice that says that international students have good quality care and be safe and secure while they are in New Zealand. Therefore students must either live with an approved family member or take part in the College's Homestay Programme. The Homestay Manager will organise and supervise all aspects of the student's accommodation.

English Language and Entry Requirements

Students are placed where possible at their appropriate age level. A recent school report is required with the application. All students' English is assessed on arrival and the final level placement is decided by the Dean. A course of at least 2 years is necessary for most students wishing to qualify to enter university. Students wishing to enter at Year 13 are accepted only in exceptional circumstances.

English Language Support

Orientation programmes are arranged when students arrive. Special courses in English are offered at no extra cost to all students who need this tuition, as well as English language support in other subjects.

Fees for 2011

Annual tuition fees: NZ$14,000.
Homestay: NZ$230 per week
Homestay Support fee: NZ$600 (per year).
Uniform (years9 - 12) costs approx. NZ$400 - $600.
Travel and Medical Insurance (required) for one year NZ$490.
