Otaki College

Otaki College takes boys and girls from 11 to18 years old. The College was established in 1959 and is in an ideal location only 55 minutes away from the capital city of Wellington, yet near the beach and mountains. International students make up a maximum of 8% of the College's roll.

Course Details

Otaki College has very small senior classes and this leads to excellent national examination results. A wide range of subjects is available. Students can enter for national qualifications at Years 11, 12 and 13 and can enter the special Outdoor Academy. All international students are offered extra ESOL classes to support their other subjects. Senior students are prepared for the IELTS test.

Years 7 and 8

Otaki College is approved to enrol international students as young as 11. There is a very strong Year 7 and 8 department in the College which offers students a sound education in the secure environment provided by homerooms.

Years 9 and 10

At years 9 and 10 students follow a programme with a compulsory core of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Technology, and Physical Education. In addition student may choose from a wide range of other subjects such as Art, Music, Japanese, Computing, and Practical Skills.

Years 11, 12 and 13

Thequalification for Years 11, 12 and 13 studentsis the National Certificate in Educational Achievement. In the NCEAeach subject area is divided into a number of ‘Achievement Standards’, some of which are internally assessed during the year and some of which are externally assessed in examinations to be held in November. Each Achievement Standard contains ‘credits’ that build towards a National Certificate.


Year 11:- 21 subjects are offered.

Year 12: 25 subjects are offered.

Year 13: -20 subjects are offered.

ESOL

The College has well qualified ESOL staff. Students are individually assessed on arrival and this determines their placement in the ESOL programme. Students may have between 4 and 12 hours of specialised ESOL tuitioneach week.

Accommodation

Students are placed with local homestay families. The Homestay Coordinator will meet the students at the airport. Homestays are carefully selected and regularly minotired. The homestay fee in 2005 is NZ$170 per week.

Group Tours

Group visits from two to four weeks available. Any time from February to October is appropriate. Early bookings are essential.

Tuition Fees 2005

Tuition fees are NZ$8,700 per annum. This covers all tuition, textbook loan and class materials. An enrolment fee of NZ$750 is also charged.
