Chu Nguyen Nhat Linh

Linh Chu chose to begin her New Zealand education at secondary school, starting last year in Year 12 at Avonside Girls’ High School in Christchurch. During this first year, she studied Chemistry, Mathematics, Art, Graphics and Design, Computing and English. By the end of 2003, not only did she gain her NCEA Level 2 Certificate (National Certificate of Educational Achievement), she also obtained academic prizes as a top student in Chemistry and Art.

With a passion for Art and Design, for her Year 13 programme Linh has chosen to study Art design, Art Painting, Graphics, Mathematics with Calculus and English.

“Schooling in New Zealand has given me more choices and options than I would have had in Vietnam with many more practical opportunities in my classes.”

After only one year in New Zealand, Linh is very comfortable in her school environment. She is a valued school leader in her Year 13 year and organises activities for other International students in the school.

There are many characteristics of the New Zealand education which Linh has found of real benefit, however she particularly values the initiative, organisation, lateral thinking, problem-solving and listening skills she has acquired at Avonside – “these are as a result of my New Zealand education.

“And in addition to my studies, for me the most important things I’ve got from my time in New Zealand is becoming independent; learning English fluently, and getting to know people from other countries.

“I’ve enjoyed travelling around New Zealand, particularly the hot pools at Hanmer Springs and the scenery in the South Island. But best of all has been making close friends while at Avonside!”

Wishing to continue with her New Zealand education into the tertiary level, Linh plans to study Design at a New Zealand university next year.
