Akina Kokufuda

Name: Akina Kokufuda
Born: Japan
Locations: Auckland
Discipline: English Language

With a degree in International Relations under her belt, Akina Kokufuda has headed Down Under to broaden her skill set.

She graduated from Toyo University in Tokyo this March and is now studying English at FERN English Academy.

"Eventually I want to work in hospitality, in either an airport or a hotel. It's very difficult to get a job like that in Japan so I've come to New Zealand to improve my chances," says Akina, who is from Chiba.

"My older sister recommended New Zealand to me and although there are many language schools in Auckland, I chose FERN because of its connection with NZMA."

FERN is owned by New Zealand Management Academies (NZMA), a private training establishment specialising in hospitality, business and contact centre training. Many students from FERN continue onto NZMA's certificate or diploma courses. Its two-year National Diploma in Hospitality Management Level 5 is particularly popular with international students.

"At the moment I just want to concentrate on my English but later I would like to do the NZMA English for Hospitality course."

This 12-week NZQA accredited certificate programme gives students foundation English language skills specific to the hospitality industry. A range of topics are covered, including bar and restaurant service, front office, customer service and finding a job in the industry. Students are able to take advantage of the realistic training environment of NZMA's Auckland Central Academy which includes bar and restaurant training areas as well as a working caf run by NZMA students. They also discover more about the industry through field trips and guest speakers. Successful completion of this course guarantees entry into NZMA's certificate and diploma hospitality programmes.

For Akina, FERN is proving to be an excellent starting place.

"I'm really enjoying my course. I have made many friends and the teachers are very good. I'll stay for at least one year and after studying I'd like to look for a hospitality job either here or in Japan."
