Dreams of becoming a customs officer in Korea have motivated Do Sung Lee (Dawson) to study English Down Under.
The enthusiastic 25 year old arrived in Auckland last August, fired up to improve his language skills and ultimately, his employability.
"A good level of English is necessary for me because eventually I'd like to become a customs officer at an airport or harbour," says Dawson, who is from Incheon, near Seoul. Partway through a university degree majoring in international trade, he plans to return to Korea in August to complete his degree before launching his career.
While in New Zealand, Dawson is making the most of every opportunity to step up his English level. For the first six months he studied General English at an Auckland language school before starting the IELTS preparation class at FERN English Academy.
"I was told that the FERN IELTS course was very good, which is why I came here. I'm really impressed with the school it has a great atmosphere. The teachers are very kind and friendly and I really like their teaching style. IELTS classes deal with difficult subjects and vocab but the teachers make it a lot easier for us to learn.
"FERN is quite a small school but the facilities are good. They have excellent listening facilities, a computer room and library. And because of its size you can make friends easily here."
Outside the classroom Dawson is also working hard to polish his English. At the weekends he works at a kebab restaurant in an inner-city food-court, providing him with a fantastic opportunity to converse with his customers and also practice his listening skills. In addition, he lives in a homestay with Kiwis and has made some Kiwi friends. This sort of full-immersion ensures students progress in leaps and bounds.
"I'm really enjoying my time in Auckland. Kiwis are very talkative and friendly and the language schools are good. This is a good experience for me."
