When it comes to international trade, communication skills are vital.
That's the view of Sung Woong Yeom (Bruce) and that's why he has taken a year out of his university studies to come to New Zealand.
"In Korea I'm a university student majoring in Economics. When I graduate I'd like to get a job in marketing. I'd like to work for a company for four or five years and then my dream is to set up my own business in trade. The most important thing in international trade is communication skills so that is why I have to study English," says Bruce.
The 24 year old from Busan arrived in Auckland in March.
"Originally I wanted to go to the Philippines because it's cheap, but it's not very safe. New Zealand was my next choice it has a good environment and it is not expensive.
"I have a friend who had studied business at New Zealand Management Academies (NZMA) and she recommended FERN to me. I've only been here a short time but already I've moved from intermediate to upper-intermediate and I've gained a lot more confidence in speaking to others. I was really shy when I arrived."
One of the main things that attracted Bruce to FERN was its size.
"I don't like big academies. FERN is small like a family and everyone is friendly."
While in New Zealand Bruce plans to improve his conversation skills and then work towards IELTS. He's also keen to look for work here. And although it has taken some getting used to, the Land of the Long White Cloud is growing on him.
"At first I thought New Zealand was very quiet... a little bit boring actually! But it's a good place for study. I'm living in a Kiwi home stay with a very kind family. In our house we also have a student from Malaysia and one from Brazil, so sometimes we drink beer together or go to a club. It's good!"
