Speaking English fluently is vital for Tanutchapora Thawornviriyanan (Louise).

The Thai 34 year old manages two hotels in her hometown of Chanthaburi a role which sees her dealing with guests from all corners of the globe.

"My family owns a hotel in the city and a hotel at the beach and I manage both of them," says Louise. "One has 150 rooms and the other has 130."

Louise has been managing hotels for the last nine years, starting off her career in a small 50-room hotel and then working her way up.

She studied hotel management in Bangkok a couple of years ago and then last year decided she needed to focus more on improving her English. After some extensive research into studying abroad she headed Down Under.

"I really want to improve my English - it's very important for my job. My agent in Thailand recommended FERN to me so I've enrolled for six months of General English here."

Louise is now a couple of months into her studies at FERN and feels she is making great progress.

"I definitely feel like I'm improving! FERN is a great school to study at because the classes are small and the teachers take good care of their students. I'm really enjoying it."

She hopes that before she returns to Thailand later this year she may have the opportunity to study English for Hospitality, which is also offered at FERN. This course teaches foundation English language skills specific to the hospitality industry and also provides learners with a taste of hospitality New Zealand style through a range of field trips and guest speakers.

Although Louise has travelled extensively, this is the first time she's gone abroad with a specific study goal. She's enjoying the experience, both inside and outside the classroom.

"I'm living with a lovely homestay family in One Tree Hill and I'm having a really good time in New Zealand. The people are friendly, the weather is pleasant and it's nice and quiet."
