Name: Jullapun (Tom) Pimpisarn
Born: Thailand
Age: 29

Discipline: English Language

English language skills are more important in some jobs than others.

In Jullapun Pimpisarn's case, they are a must.

The ambitious 29 year old, whose English name is Tom, works as a lawyer for a law firm based in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Over 90 percent of his clients are foreigners, so having a good grasp of English is crucial. In fact his company believes speaking English fluently is such a necessity that they've sent Tom to New Zealand for seven months to study.

In what must feel like stepping into another life, Tom has swapped his suits and smart office for casual clothes and the classrooms of FERN English Academy. It's a far cry from Chiang Mai, but it's an experience that Tom is embracing wholeheartedly.

"I came to New Zealand in October last year and am studying General English at FERN. The law firm I work for wanted me to improve my English. I've been working for them since I graduated from university with my law degree," says Tom.

Originally he wanted to study in England, but the costs were prohibitive. New Zealand was Tom's second choice and he found out about FERN at an education fair in Thailand.

"This is the first time I've studied English abroad and I feel very lucky because my company is paying for me to come here, for my tuition, my homestay accommodation and pocket money. I'll study for six months and then spend one month travelling around New Zealand before I head home."

Since arriving here, Tom's English has advanced in leaps and bounds.

"The teachers at FERN are very kind and they have good teaching techniques. My English is definitely improving. My grammar is slow to improve - but because of my job, listening and speaking skills are actually more important in order to consult with my clients. My listening and speaking are definitely getting better!"

Eventually Tom would like to become a partner in a law firm and has his sights set on retiring from his career by the time he hits 50.

"I think I'll definitely need a change in lifestyle by then. Working as a lawyer is a very stressful job with very long hours."
