Born: Korea South
Age: 21

Discipline: English Language

Jeong Yoon Lee (Claire) is taking a break from her university studies to improve her English.

The 21 year old from Yeosu, Korea, is majoring in International Trade so English language skills are essential. With 18 months of her degree yet to complete, Claire is spending a year Down Under and will head back to university in August.

"I wish I could stay longer than a year though I just love New Zealand," says Claire, who came here on the recommendation of a friend of her mothers.

"I love taking photos and there are so many beautiful things to photograph here the beaches are stunning, the views are nice and the city is quiet. It's also cheaper than lots of other countries."

Claire is studying English at FERN, which her mother's friend also recommended.

"She told me FERN had a good atmosphere with small classes and I agree with her. I'm really enjoying studying here. The teachers are highly skilled with good teaching techniques and the other students are very nice. Sometimes I take part in the conversation club after school which is fun and improves my English ability. Also after school each day there is a teacher in the library to help students one-on-one. They help us with any problems we may have and check our writing. It's very useful."

And it has obviously been paying off. When Claire started at FERN in October she was in the Elementary class, however she has progressed in leaps and bounds and is now studying General English at Intermediate level. She hopes to soon join the IELTS Preparation class.

After graduating from FERN, Claire has her sights set on completing the NZMA 16 hour Barista course.

"I love coffee and want to learn how to make it properly. I'd love to get a part-time job in a caf while I am here."

This experience would undoubtedly stand her in good stead when pursuing her dream job.

"I'm not so sure I want a career in international trade anymore. I'll finish my degree but what I'd really like to do in the future is become a flight attendant for a foreign airline."

Wherever she ends up, Claire's improved English language skills will be a definite advantage.
