Name: Kingiri Senelwa
Born: Kenya
Age: -
Locations: Manawatu - Wanganui
Discipline: Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry
Kingiri Senelwa was born in a small Kenyan village that had no piped water or electricity. His people's traditional dependence on small-scale agriculture and fuelwood for heating and cooking in traditional appliances, lead him to pursue a career in Forestry Resources and Wildlife Management, where he felt he could make a difference.
Currently a Senior Lecturer at Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya, Senelwa's New Zealand experience began when he met some Massey University professors at an international conference in the early 1990's and was struck by their fresh approach to thinking and solving problems.
He became intrigued by the idea of studying in New Zealand because of the 'uniqueness' he felt the culture could offer in contrast to Europe and the Americas.
He enquired about furthering his knowledge with study in Palmerston North and found, to his delight, that a course could be 'tailored' to his specific requirements.
"The people were extremely friendly - sometimes more welcoming than some tribes in my own country! The barbecues in summer were unforgettable. The staff and students had frequent get-togethers with social games of football, netball and cricket. The Maori culture was of interest too, being close to many African cultures."
"My study, combining energy, forestry, agriculture, engineering and environmental science provided a unique blend of both expertise and experience. It has been so relevant to many aspects of my work at home. My exposure to New Zealand academics also expanded my interaction with professionals from other countries. Most of the contacts I made are continuing and are extremely fruitful."
The Manawatu and Wanganui districts are popular with international students.
