Age: 41

A referral to Auckland for medical treatment found Marcus Kopu on New Zealand soil in 1998. Five years and one degree later, Marcus now has his sights firmly set on an MBA at Massey University.

"I thought study wasn't for me. So I left school and started work but soon realised how disadvantaged I was by not having any qualifications." Work experience led Marcus to develop an interest in management. Studying via correspondence in the Cook Islands, and with his employer at the time nurturing his career aspirations, Marcus gained his certificate and then a diploma in Management.

Moving to New Zealand was not part of his plan. However, making the most of a situation dictated by his medical condition, Marcus considered the moment opportune to pursue full time study in management. He enrolled at AIS in St Helens in a Bachelor of International Business programme.

"I chose AIS because it fitted into my profile of what I wanted from a school. It's a small institute with small classes. If I worked really hard I could do my degree faster than three years".

Not only did Marcus achieve his personal goal of completing his degree without any repeats, but he also won an Enterprise Award in 2001 for his diligence and good results.

"It gave me a lot of confidence. No matter what the obstacles are, if you really put the effort in you can overcome anything. I really wanted my degree. I was determined and I set my mind to it."

"I really enjoyed doing my BIB at AIS. The lecturers were really good. They were available all the time and provided us with lots of help and encouragement."

Marcus now has a confidence in himself that he didn't have before. The realisation of achieving his goals and overcoming obstacles has inspired him further. Marcus' newfound ambition will steer him to Massey University where he will complete his MBA in International Business Studies.

"Life is a long and winding road you just never know what is round the corner!"
