5, 4, 3, 2, 1… Bungy!!
Saturday, 20 June 2009
It was the day our Kiwi IQ winners have been waiting for – the day they got to go bungy jumping in Queenstown, at the original AJ Hackett bungy site, the Kawerau Bridge. They’ve been throwing willing victims off the bridge for 20 years now, so you know they’ve got it down to an art.
First, there was a short flight from Christchurch to Queenstown, where the Southern Alps put on quite a show with their snowy peaks and dramatic views. In fact, it was hard to believe the plane could land in the middle of all of that, but somehow the pilot put it down safely.
There was a bit of time for quiet contemplation on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, while the winners thought about the important things in life before committing themselves to leaping 43 metres from a bridge.
When the time came, Vikash was so excited he started to take off his clothes in the 5 degree weather!
Anita needed bit more persuasion, but like the winner she is she finally took the plunge and didn’t even scream.
Not only did all three winners bungy from the bridge, so did the two Indian journalists accompanying them on their trip! It was the highlight of everyone’s tour so far.
Back inside, they got to learn a bit about how bungy cords are made, and how they control the amount of bounce for each jumper. They even got a bit of bungy to bring home with them, along with an awesome DVD of their jumps and some great photos, and of course an AJ Hackett Bungy t-shirt to prove to their friends how brave (or crazy!) they are.
What else does Queenstown, New Zealand’s adventure capital, have in store for the Kiwi IQ gang? They’ll find out tomorrow!
