Last Stop – Auckland
Tuesday, 23 June 2009
It was the final day of the Kiwi IQ winners’ tour of New Zealand, and it finished up where it all began, in Auckland. It was a busy last day with two institution visits and a media interview before the winners finally got a bit of time to pick up gifts and souvenirs to take home.
The first stop of the day was AIS St Helens, a private tertiary institution that offers a number of degree programmes in business, IT and hospitality. Anita and Ibrahim were keen to hear what the director, Richard Smith, had to say about educational and career pathways.
The final academic stop for the tour was at the Unitec campus in the Auckland suburb of Mt Albert. A van was necessary to show them the sprawling facilities over a beautifully green campus. They visited a mixture of modern and heritage buildings which are used by Unitec for different disciplines.
Then there was a great send off lunch with food from a local Indian restaurant, a chance to chat with Indian Unitec students, and even a Hindi soundtrack.
The winners got their final taste of the spotlight back at the Quadrant Hotel, where they were interviewed by Venkat Raman from the Indian Newslink newspaper. They looked back on their trip and shared with Venkat their experiences around New Zealand and their plans to return here for their studies in the future.
The rest of the day could then be devoted to important activities like shopping, and visiting with friends and relatives around Auckland. It was a busy end to a very busy 10 days!
Tomorrow they begin the long voyage home to India, where there’s no doubt they’ll be asked to share their experiences again and again.
