Going Wild in Wellington
Wednesday, 17 June 2009
The Kiwi IQ winners were off to an early start to fly down to New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington, for another jam-packed day.
The views from the flight were awesome, particularly as they passed over Lake Taupo, and the volcanic trio of Mt. Tongariro, Mt. Ngauruhoe and Mt. Ruapehu, all sporting a fresh layer of snow.
Once in Wellington, they were whisked away to the Weltec (Wellington Institute of Technology) campus in the seaside suburb of Petone.
They were interviewed by a local reporter about their adventures so far, and then had a chance to mix and mingle with Indian Weltec students over lunch.
Their visit concluded with a campus tour, where Anita picked up some pie baking tips in the hospitality classrooms.
Then back in Wellington they climbed abord a Wellington Rover Tour with their intrepid guide Craig. He gave them a spectacular view of the city from Mt. Victoria, then headed for the rugged south coast where the waves were crashing into shore very impressively.
Finally, they went for the more subdued atmosphere of the Zealandia Sanctuary, an urban wildlife sanctuary right in Wellington.
They were entertained by the local parrots, called kakas, before going on a search through the dark pathways for the elusive and nocturnal symbol of New Zealand, the kiwi. While they didn’t spot any kiwi, they did hear one calling through the darkness.
It was a quite an introduction to the city that keeps New Zealand’s wheels turning. They’ve got another great day of capital explorations coming up.
