The papers offered by the University of Waikato towards the Master of Social Sciences (MSocSc) have been designed to achieve the following particular outcomes involving mastery of content, acquisition of skills and development of attributes. Learning experiences are incorporated into the programme to bring about these desired outcomes, and assessment is designed to ensure that students have the opportunity to demonstrate their achievement. The generic capabilities developed by our graduates are of critical importance, as are specialist knowledge and skills.
The MSocSc is an advanced one-year programme of study in a Social Science discipline, which is intended for those students who want to deepen their knowledge of that subject, and which includes a substantial component of independent research.
The breadth of the overall skills and attributes Master of Social Sciences graduates have acquired through their studies provide them with the critical analysis skills and the understanding to make a positive, relevant and innovative contribution to the social and economic development, the labour market and their communities.
To be admitted to the MSocSc, you must have completed a Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours (or the equivalent) in the same subject and must have achieved a satisfactory grade average - normally a B+ average or better. You also need to have appropriate supervision arranged. Admission criteria may vary so please consult the relevant Graduate Adviser for their admission criteria.
Admission to the MSocSc requires the agreement of the Chairperson or Director of the major subject or programme and agreement of the Dean of Arts and Social Sciences (or nominee).
