Interested in helping to improve and protect our environment’s infrastructure? If you’re technically minded, a career in civil engineering could suit you down to the ground. Study civil engineering and gain a solid understanding of water engineering, structural engineering, and the design and maintenance of road infrastructures. Perfect your civil and structural draughting skills, and apply your technical knowledge through site visits and lab work.

A Unitec qualification in civil engineering will help prepare you for an action-packed career where no day is the same. As a New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil) student, you will explore civil engineering concepts, contract administration and construction practice. You’ll become familiar with engineering materials and structures, hydraulics and land surveying.

There is great demand for technically trained engineers worldwide, in particular those with a specialisation, so the diploma purposely allows you to focus on one of three areas:

Structures – the building of dams, bridges, high rise buildings, viaducts, and wharves
Fluids – flood protection, harbour development, erosion control, water reticulation and waste management
Transportation – the design, construction and maintenance of roads, rail, sea and airport developments

Applicants must:

  • Have an overall IELTS band score (Academic) of no less than 6.0 (with no band score lower than 5.0), or a TOEFL score of no less than 550, or equivalent; or
  • Have an appropriate Unitec English language qualification, such as the Certificate in English (Academic), or equivalent.
