Programme Aim:
The Diploma in Early Childhood Education (Pasifika) (Level 5) will prepare students for a career in early childhood education by providing them with the equivalent of the first year of a three or four year Diploma or Degree programme in early childhood teaching. The course will provide students with core professional knowledge, skills and experiences in the early childhood education field.
Holders of this qualification will have demonstrated knowledge and skills in the area of:

  • Teaching that is relevant to all early childhood education centres with Pacific children
  • Safety and/or classroom management skills in early childhood education centres with Pacific children
  • Pacific ECE curriculum and interaction with Pacific families and communities
  • Theories and influences on human development across the lifespan
  • How knowledge of human development theories relates to practice in an early childhood setting
  • The relationship between Desirable Objectives and Practices and the delivery of quality learning and development opportunities for young children Desirable Objectives and Practices in a chartered early childhood (EC) service

Graduate Outcome:
Students completing this course will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to all early childhood education centres with Pasifika children. Graduates will be able to demonstrate high level safety and classroom management skills, knowledge and skills in the Pasifika curriculum and interactions with Pasifika families and communities and current understandings of early childhood learning and practice. Graduate students may continue to work towards completing a teaching qualification recognised by the New Zealand Teacher’s Council or gain employment as an edu-carer or nanny working privately or for agencies with young children in homes.
Career Opportunities:
This qualification may lead to further education or part-time as an ECE educator.

Entry Criteria:

  • A minimum of 18 years of age
  • Applicants must also undergo a Police Check, interview and provide their curriculum vitae
  • 10+2 graduate or relevant qualification
  • International students for whom English is a second language must have achieved a minimum English Language requirement of an Academic IELTS level of 6.0 (average) or equivalent.
