Programme Aim: 
NZCC Certificate in Education (Learning Support) (Level 4) will provide professional-level knowledge, skills, attitudes and values appropriate to a teacher aide para-professional role. This course is suitable for individuals interested in providing support to classroom teachers and facilitate the learning of pre and primary students (with options in secondary and tertiary).

Holders of this qualification will have demonstrated knowledge and skills in the area of: 

  • Research skills to access professional information and resources
  • Communication skills required in learning support or teacher aide work 
  • Learning development and behavioural management skills and strategies 
  • Educational psychology and human development 
  • Diversity in education, including processes and strategies to meet the needs related to abuse of children and others in learning and other contexts 
  • Cultural diversity with regards to the Treaty of Waitangi and its underpinning relationship principles and how they inform learning support or teacher aide work

Graduate Outcome: 
Graduates of this practice-based course will be capable of planning, implementing, assessing and evaluating a range of learning support activities for a diverse range of learners. Graduates will also be capable of effectively assisting a learner or classroom teacher in an early childhood, primary, and possibly secondary, tertiary or adult-learner setting, to learn in an individual, pair or small group context and to overcome a range of learning barriers and difficulties and to achieve learning or positive behavioural outcomes.

Career Opportunities: 
This qualification may lead to employment as a teacher aide, special education aide, or learning support tutor at a range of education levels.

Entry Criteria:

  • A minimum of 18 years of age 
  • Applicants must also undergo a Police Check, interview and provide their curriculum vitae
  • 10+2 graduate or relevant qualification
  • International students for whom English is a second language must have achieved a minimum English Language requirement of an Academic IELTS level of 6.0 (average) or equivalent.
  • Good communication skills and a desire to work with children
