This programme has a strong research focus providing the student with systematic training in research methods. It requires the student to complete a piece of original research or scholarship, which includes higher-order skills in analysis and critical evaluation.
Entry Requirements
Bachelor of Midwifery; OR Postgraduate Certificate in Midwifery Practice; OR Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery; OR Bachelor degree in some other subject.
In this case the applicant should also submit a portfolio relating to midwifery, demonstrating appropriate professional and scholarly achievement.
Subjects
The Programme comprises eight papers that will enable the student to meet the graduate profile for the Master of Midwifery, including the following compulsory papers:
- Knowledge and theory in midwifery
- Research methods in midwifery practice
- Midwifery praxis: reflection on practice
- Dissertation or two-paper thesis or three-paper thesis
Optional Subjects
Depending on whether students study for a dissertation, two-paper thesis or three-paper thesis, two, three or four additional subjects from the following list must also be taken to complete the programme.
- Midwifery practice as a core facility midwife
- Midwifery practice as a continuity midwife
- Politics and practice of breastfeeding
- Midwifery practice in tertiary maternity settings
- Midwifery practice in rural and primary maternity settings
- Childbearing and knowledge sharing
- Preceptorship and mentoring for midwives
- Social and health policy: influence on midwifery services
- Leadership and change in midwifery practice
- Clinical inquiry - evidence for practice
- Integration of cultural safety in midwifery practice
- Feminist epistemology
- Special topic
English Requirement - overall band score (Academic) of 7.5 IELTS (with no individual score less than 7.0), or recognised equivalent
