The Doctor of Fine Arts (DocFA) is a studio-based research degree. You are required to develop a formal, systematic exposition of a substantial piece of original creative work, founded on a chosen research question. This is an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the field of contemporary art and/or design.

The results of your practice-based research are predominantly presented through exhibitions, performances and/or other creative works. The final presentation is supported by a written submission.
You must have completed a Master of Fine Arts by research at a recognised university (rather than a taught programme) or equivalent, and have achieved to an appropriate standard.

The Doctor of Fine Arts (DocFA) is the highest level university qualification available in fine arts at the University of Auckland that is founded on studio-based practice. If you wish to undertake asolely written thesis you should apply for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Fine Arts.
