Zhuo (Wendy) Xian

As the University of Canterbury is known worldwide for its Forestry programmes it made sense for Wendy to want to pursue her Master of Forestry Science here. It was actually Wendy's Forestry professor at her university in China that recommended she study overseas. Her professor recommended both Canada and New Zealand as study destinations, however the high standing of Canterbury's Forestry programme helped her to make her decision.

At the moment Wendy is studying for the Certificate in English for Tertiary Studies. Her English has improved dramatically since she started the course. "In China I was taught how to pass English examinations rather than to use the language. Here I learn, study and think in English so I am improving every day". Wendy has also made a lot of new friends and lives with a home stay family so she able to practise her English out of class too.

While she has been here, Wendy has made the most of the South Island's scenic spots. She has been snowborading in Queenstown, holidaying in Milford Sound, paragliding, horse riding and is even learning to play golf. "I have tried lots of new things and the fact I am busy and have the support of my friends means I do not feel homesick".
