Hussain was fortunate to have received a scholarship from the Saudi Arabian government to assist him with his studies. While Hussain had the option of studying in Canada and Australia, he chose to study in New Zealand even though he didn’t know that much about the country.
Now he is here, Hussain feels he made the right choice. “I am enjoying living in New Zealand. When I am not studying I like to spend time sightseeing and I also enjoy skiing. The New Zealand landscape is very different to that of Saudi Arabia”.
Hussain is studying hard in order to realise his dream of gaining either a degree in Engineering or Computer Science. He was surprised when he first started his course that students refer to teachers by their first name and that students are encouraged to be independent learners. “Here students take more responsibility for their learning and there is much greater contact between teacher and student.”
Hussain’s favourite class is Mathematics. “I really like my teacher as he is funny so the class is really enjoyable.”

Christchurch is the main centre of the Canterbury region, an elegant old city close to the Southern Alps.
