Gina Tari

Name: Gina Tari
Born: Vanuatu
Locations: Northland
Discipline: Environmental Studies

Gina Tari is dedicated to protect the environment in her home country, Vanuatu, and has chosen this area for her career path. "Like other pacific countries, Vanuatu is one that is very concerned about its environment and its remaining resources, for the benefits of the future generations...that there is enough left for everyone."

A critical component for her and one that has led directly to results was completion of an international qualification in environmental management. Accordingly, Gina chose a New Zealand certificate and diploma programme. "I studied for the Certificate & Diploma in Environmental Management at Northland Polytechnic, which had the ideal environment socially and academically to enable me to successfully complete my studies. The International team was very friendly and made me feel at home, although home was thousands of miles away.

I really enjoyed the course as I gained knowledge as well as practical skills required, to address environmental issues facing my country. The lecturers and tutors were very committed, realistic, supportive, friendly and above all motivated to get us through a tough semester.

After successfully completed a Certificate in Environmental Management, I am now employed back in Vanuatu with an Environmental NGO (national government organisation), called the Vanuatu Protected Areas Initiative (VPAI). I am now enjoying my job, to protect and manage my country's natural resources for the benefits of the future generations."

Additionally, with her New Zealand education as inspiration, Gina is now working on a project proposal for a pilot environmental education project in schools on east and south Santo.
