It is a great opportunity to include within your secondary schooling some international experience. For Nguyen Thanh Tram, her opportunity came through a nationwide competition in Vietnam, held by the local office of New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. On offer was a four-week scholarship, for four weeks of English language study at Northland Polytechnic in Whangarei.
In order to win the scholarship, Tram had to answer a series of questions about New Zealand and, after the event, give a short oral presentation to a panel of judges. Her speech clearly indicates the many benefits she obtained from her brief, but fulfilling, New Zealand education.
"I had such a wonderful time in New Zealand and at that Northland Polytechnic, one that I can never forget. I joined in various activities in class that has helped me be more confident. Once I played a role in a "soap opera". That was the most exciting activity I have ever participated in! In addition, the lessons were very helpful for me.
"What's more I have met many foreign friends who are nice and friendly. Besides, I have visited many interesting places in New Zealand and taken lots of pictures! On the whole, visiting and studying at Northland Polytechnic are good and useful experiences for me".
Despite only four weeks in length, this has been a life-changing experience for this young woman one she will never forget. Now back in Vietnam, Tram is continuing her secondary education however with greatly enhanced English language skills.
