Men Dapeng (Sean) firmly believes his time studying at Northland Polytechnic for a Bachelor of Business - has helped him to achieve his goal of gaining acceptance into the Monash University Post Graduate programme in Australia.
Sean began his tertiary studies in Finance and Economics at Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics (JUFE) in Nanchang, China. JUFE has agreements with several international institutions who offer students the option of completing their qualifications in the USA, UK or New Zealand. When asked why he chose the option of completing his degree at Northland Polytechnic in New Zealand, Sean said that "cheaper tuition and living costs were one factor, but the main reason was the beautiful environment and safer, friendlier lifestyle in New Zealand. Some of my friends have been to study at Northland Polytechnic in previous years and they recommended it".
Sean found Whangarei the perfect place to concentrate on his studies. "The environment in bigger cities is not as good for study and there are too many distractions. However my tutor's time was not limited. In big institutions there are always so many students who want to see the tutor that it is much harder to get help when you need it". As a result and including hard work Sean achieved excellent results.
Whilst at Northland Polytechnic, Sean's business programme placed emphasis on enterprise, innovation, small business management and practical application of theory. The qualification is developed with input from industry representatives.
Sean stayed with a host family when he first arrived and found this was a good way to meet people and learn about the city. His favourite hobbies included fishing and playing badminton. He also found a part-time job at a local supermarket which he was able to do under the terms of his student visa - an experience that helped him to make "Kiwi" friends and improve his English language skills.
Having now graduated, Sean is well-placed to commence his post graduate studies at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia in 2005.
