Northland, New Zealand’s northern most region, is known for its stunning beaches and sunshine.

Northland Polytechnic is located in Whangarei, just 30 minutes by air (or two hours' drive by car) north of Auckland, in a beautiful natural environment, close to many of New Zealand's magnificent ocean beaches and native forests.

Northland Polytechnic was established in 1978. The campus is set in attractive park-like surroundings and is only minutes' drive from the city centre. Class sizes are small with a maximum of 15 students on English language programmes and 30 - 35 students on academic programmes. Approximately 150 international students are included in the 3,400 full-time and part-time students studying at Northland Polytechnic.

Programmes Available

English Language Programmes:

We offer English language courses (including general English and IELTS preparation) and academic programmes at certificate, diploma and degree level. English language students can apply for an academic programme when they meet the entry requirements. Most certificate courses require an English language level equivalent to grade a 5.5 in the academic module of the IELTS exam (TOEFL 525) and diploma programmes require a 6.0 IELTS ( TOEFL 550). Students can start at the certificate level and staircase through to degree programmes.

Northland Polytechnic has been accredited by The British Council as an official IELTS Testing Centre.

All our programmes have been approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

Northland Polytechnic is a signatory to the New Zealand Ministry of Education's Code of Practice.

Academic Year

The academic year is divided into two semesters. Academic programmes commence in February and some also have a July intake. English language programmes have monthly intakes throughout the year.


Facilities

Campus facilities include a well resourced library, email and Internet access, computer resource room, student cafeteria, health centre, student learning support and gym.

We have a friendly caring support team based at the International Centre to help you in your studies and with any concerns you have about adjusting to life in New Zealand. This includes:

  • English language tutorials - for assignments, essays, exam preparation, etc
  • Visa applications, insurance, travel information around New Zealand
  • Academic counselling for students wanting to know more about academic programmes.

Depending on the time of year you study with us, you will have the opportunity to participate in activities such as a Powhiri (traditional Maori culture welcome ceremony), a Welcome Ceremony with the District Mayor, beach trips and programmes designed to help you meet Kiwi students.

The Northland Polytechnic campus is set in park-like grounds which provide an ideal environment for concentrating on your studies. There are no major roads through our campus or high-rise classroom buildings, and car parking is free.

Our computer system was upgraded in 2004 and students have access to the latest Microsoft software (Office XP and Windows XP).

The Northland Polytechnic International Centre works closely with local high schools. International secondary school students are welcome to visit our campus any time to observe classes and talk to academic staff.

Accommodation

Northland Polytechnic finds suitable homestay accommodation for international students. Living with a friendly host family is the best way to learn about the New Zealand way of life. Host families support their student with their studies.

Homestay cost per week - $150 (all meals).
