NZ Schools Win at Global Problem Solving Challenge
Thursday, 24 June 2010
It's a big ask to solve the problems of the world, but three New Zealand schools seem well equipped to handle the challenge.
(via TVNZ) The team from Cobham Intermediate School in Christchurch is back from the International Future Problem Solving Competition in the US after winning the top prize.
"It's pretty exhilirating, I wasn't expecting so many people," says student Victor Daddiza.
But they are not the only New Zealand school to win big. Manukau's Mission Heights Primary (Auckland) and Matamata College (Waikato) also won trophies.
Julie Rogers, the coach of the Cobham Intermediate team, says she is proud of how well the New Zealand teams did.
"I think they were a bit amazed, because often the USA teams do very, very well, and this year probably New Zealand were the big winners."
The event is designed to extend gifted children, and the complex solutions that the 12-year-olds managed to devise has left one grandfather very optimistic about the future.
"We're in good hands for the future, we really are with people like this and children like this," says Peter Cook.
