guide_to_new_zealand Induction & orientation

Induction & orientation

When you arrive in New Zealand you’ll be met at the airport and taken to your accommodation by a representative from your institution.

Language school

A typical language school orientation will involve a tour of the building and introduction to staff, followed by a talk - probably in your language - about life in New Zealand and the homestay programme. Advisors and counsellors provide ongoing support.

Secondary school

Secondary schools provide different types of orientation including campus tours and homestay family events. A peer support group provides ongoing support.

Tertiary students

Special orientation programmes are provided for first-year international students. You’ll probably receive an official welcome to the institution on its marae (Maori meeting house and grounds).

Your programme will include course advice and enrolment, an introduction to student services and procedures and tours of the university campus and the city. It may include a social outing - a great way to meet other students, and your international office staff.

Orientation week

Orientation week is held at all tertiary institutions, to introduce new students to life on campus and celebrate the start of the year. There are cultural festivals, wine trails, concerts, bands, DJs, films and comedy performances. It’s a fun and easy way to meet other students.
