Clothing

In keeping with New Zealand's relaxed lifestyle, dress is informal on most occasions. Some primary and most secondary schools require students to wear a uniform. At tertiary institutions you can wear what you like. Most families wear shoes inside their house, but some prefer to leave their shoes at the door.

In winter you'll need:

  • warm footwear for wet weather
  • woollen sweaters or other warm garments
  • a windproof jacket and waterproof coat.

In summer you'll need:

  • a sunhat or cap
  • a long-sleeved shirt or blouse made of cool fabric
  • suitable footwear for outings to the beach and the bush.

Your national costume

You might like to bring your national costume to wear at functions organised by your educational institution or local community. Recipes for traditional dishes from your country are a good idea too.
